Swans Locking Eyes

  • location: Dublin, Ireland
  • date: March 2014

While on a day trip around Dublin to Trinity College and its numerous Irish churches, I found myself fortuitously in St. Stephen's Green. It was a clear, sunny, spring afternoon, and the park was busy, with an especially large crowd of excited children and their mothers around the swans at the lake. Seeing swans at a park is common enough that I perfunctorily snapped a few pictures, then moved out of the way for more eager audiences. It was only when I got back from the trip that I realized how perfectly two swans were looking at each other with their locked eyes and arched necks. It did not hurt that the blue of the sky and the orangish-yellow reflections of the park foliage juxtaposed each other so well on opposing sides of the lake.

A reminder that beauty is all around us. All we have to do is take the time to look.
